How much does kitesurfing equipment cost?
For starters, you have to figure out your budget. You can aim for the lower end of the spectrum and go for second-hand equipment or you can go premium and buy new equipment.
First of all, you should keep in mind that buying second-hand kite surfing equipment is like buying a second-hand version of basically everything else. The prices usually depend on the product’s condition and also how much people are willing to pay for it and how much the owner is willing to sell it for. It’s only logical, brand new equipment has a lot of different price ranges, for that reason the second-hand versions prices will vary as well, albeit they will always be cheaper.
As a beginner, it might be hard to figure out which equipment is worth it at its price range and if it’s still in good condition or not. There are a lot of different things you have to be aware of in order to properly evaluate the condition of a kite. Therefore, for second-hand equipment it’s advisable to always buy from someone you know, someone you trust, ensuring you get your money’s worth for the equipment you’re buying.
All these reasons make it hard to throw average price numbers in the air, but we, as a kite school, are always reselling our kites after one season, comprising of six or seven months of use. The main reason we do this, is to offer lightly used kites at much friendlier prices.
This allows us to have well-equipped customers and students, ensuring product quality and their safety while also letting us keep having renewed top-shelf equipment every season.
The second-hand equipment prices themselves vary depending on the size of the kite, but it would be roughly the following:
Kite Size varies between 6 and 14 square meters and the prices between 380 and 600 euros respectively. Other than the kite, you will need to add a second-hand bar, which also being lightly used, would be sold at around the 275 euros mark, making the setup cost between just below 700 and just above 900 euros. You will also need to add the harness to that, and while we also sell some second-hand harnesses, they are mainly for school use, since they are seat harnesses and hold your legs a little bit more making you have a little bit less freedom to move. This works wonders for the school, as the instructor can control much better how things shape up, but it’s not ideal for personal use and for your skill progression. That being said, they’re still an option and would cost about 90 euros.
Finally, we also sell some second-hand boards, which can sometimes be big; again, for teaching purposes, and might be interesting for beginners. Nevertheless, we also have some second-hand regular boards, since we have rental equipment for daily use. The boards are always around 400 euros. It may seem expensive, but keeping in mind that the regular retail price for a brand-new board from our brand, Ozone, is around 650 euro, and that the board is in good shape, it’s a steal.
Online, prices and deals fluctuate a bit. Sometimes you get equipment that has rarely been used for a cheap price, but you may also get older equipment with older safety systems and so on. Again, we advise everyone one to try and buy second-hand from someone you trust. Can’t beat that.
So, let’s go over to new equipment. Again, obviously, the price will vary depending on size and model. The best model, the 4x4 of the kite, that can do it all, wave riding, freestyling, free riding… is the Ozone Enduro, going for (bar not included) around 1,650 and 1,400 euros, depending on the size. The bar adds up another 500 euros and yet another 600 are needed for the board. As you can see, new equipment is a lot more expensive, but the good thing is you can choose the model you want, the colour you want, and while it’s expensive, we as a kite school usually give you a good deal if you are, or have been, our student. This deal ensures a minimum 15% discount on new equipment. That gives those clients the opportunity to resell their equipment after 1 or 2 years at a minimum money loss, allowing them to get new equipment at the same discount. Essentially recycling it every year if they please. The sooner the equipment gets “recycled”, less money will spend on new items, just like it works, say, reselling a car. Using the same kite for a long time is not advisable, since after a while it starts getting damaged by the sun and those older models will start to feel lacking compared to modern ones available on the shelves.
It’s heavily recommended that you use a school or a proper dealer to buy kites from, someone that gives you good advice. A school such as ours it the best to guide you on what equipment you should get. This is due to a lot of factors, especially if you’re a student, because that would mean you would be being watched by us while we assessed your progression. Experienced eyes can tell what their students should get in order to fit their style by watching them ride, and that’s what we offer here as well.
Meanwhile, regular stores might not always provide such customized customer care. So, in short, if you have taken lessons, ask your instructors for guidance.
As an important side note, it should stay clear that no student of ours is obligated to buy their own equipment, all of it is provided during the lessons. After becoming independent, if you want to kite on your own, we also offer accessible kite rental services.
We also only sell equipment that we really trust. That’s why, for the past years, our clients have seen a lot of Ozone, a brand which we are really happy with. We test all the kites and are always very happy with them, it’s a brand we confidently endorse and hope to continue to do so. This allows us to have a lot of experience with the brand we sell, ensuring we know the ins and outs for all kites, which products fit which rider and ensuring that we’ll be able to efficiently aid our clients whenever needed.
All in all: check your budget -> with that in mind, ask for the correct guidance -> choose the option that best fits your needs -> hit the water 😊
