What to do around Moledo area?

Moledo beach - KITE CONTROL PORTUGAL kitesurf spot

Moledo and its surrounding area is a beautiful place full of both exciting and leisurely activities, adequate for all kinds of people, from the most die-hard watersport fans to any couple or family looking to spend a relaxing time near gorgeous bodies of water. A landscape of natural amazement, as well as excellent infrastructures, such as wooden walkways, restaurants, parking and sanitary facilities, offer not only conditions for a nice wavy bath, but also give the most adventurous people the ability to practice watersports, such as surfing, bodyboarding, windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Moledo is situated near a bunch of other small areas with their own charm, such as Caminha, Viana do Castelo and generally the Rio Minho area. A little further away, but still close enough for any visitors to enjoy, we can find Ponte de Lima, Braga and Porto!

Caminha

The best time to visit Moledo in Portugal is from May until September, when you will have a pleasant or warm temperature and limited rainfall. The highest average temperature in Moledo is around 29°C in August and the lowest is about 9°C in January.

Moledo and its surroundings have an oceanic climate. During the best months, it’s possible to go for a swim at Praia de Moledo, as it is one of the best beaches in the region. Not only that, you can do a bunch of other things. Take a boat ride from Foz do Minho and go to Forte da Ínsua, situated off the coast of the Atlantic ocean on its own little island.

Forte de Ínsua

If you prefer to walk, just go along the Foz do Minho Beach Walkway, where you can exercise and keep in contact with nature, ending the day mesmerized at the sunset at Praia da Foz do Minho, in the great company of your significant others.

If you like walking, you can do the trail in Serra Da Agra, you won’t be disappointed… and while you’re at it, you can take a look at the Mata Nacional do Camarido, which is an undiscovered pearl for most people, so we won’t spoil the surprise. It doesn’t end here, however. Do you like animals, birds in specific? Go to the estuary of Rio Minho and have your jaw dropped by the variety of birds that fly around there.

What about history? Do you wanna know more about what happened here 2000 years ago? Travel to Braga to the ruins of Cividade de Âncora, a fortification believed to date back to the 2nd and 1st centuries BC. In the same vein, you can go about nearby and see the magnificent tile panels in the old Caminha Railway Station, teaching you a (hi)story in themselves.

Ponte de Lima

The main city close by is Viana do Castelo, the district capital (the smallest in Portugal). The best thing to do and enjoy your day in Viana do Castelo is to get lost in the Historic Center. Taking a relaxing walk and feasting your eyes on the classic buildings and little streets of this charming city. A mandatory stop is at Praça da República with its centuries-old buildings, including the Misericórdia Church, the old Paço do Conselho and the Santa Casa. Take the opportunity to sit in a cafe and contemplate this wonderful square and its fountain like nothing could ever bother you.

Another beach centered area is a village that was for a long time an important war point against Spanish and French threats. Today, Caminha stands out for different reasons, such as fresh and salt water beaches, its greenery, the usual festivals, its food and much more. Some of the festivals you might encounter include: Santa Rita de Cássia, Nossa Senhora da Bonança, S. Bento, the Festa das Solhas and the Pilgrimage of S. João D’Arga. The latter is known for being the most genuine festival in Alto Minho, where traditions, customs and, most of all, fun, rule.

While you’re around, you might as well visit Ponte de Lima. It’s main attraction is the beautiful Roman bridge over the Lima River giving the name to this beautiful village. Like most of them, this village is very well maintained, touristy, very close to Galicia and with beautiful and well-preserved buildings in the historic center. It also has many restaurants and amazing people. What more could you want? The village is very quiet, there are no floods of people and it's very beautiful to visit. It’s possible to have dinner there several times, since you’ll never feel wronged or hungry by the end! At the end of your meal, strolling along the riverside is very peaceful and awe-inspiring.

So, all in all, the Moledo area offers a huge plethora of activities you can do with your loved ones, as well as some of the most exciting scenery and activities you’ll find in western Europe. Definitely worth your time, you won’t be disappointed.
